Garden Design

Our design service is based around you, the client, and your needs.

Show Details +

Using our expertise from years of plant growing, we will work together with you to come up with ideas to transform and develop your garden, incorporating features such as walls, patios and pergolas, and choosing the right plants to compliment them perfectly and provide enjoyment for years to come.

These structures such as patios and walls are softened up with colourful planting schemes using plants grown at the well-established Holden Clough Nursery.

Designs can be made to suit the type of garden that you require, whether it be a low maintenance garden which is looked upon from inside the house, a garden which you can enjoy for more social occasions incorporating seating areas, or a traditional cottage garden planting scheme. Some of these different types of gardens are shown below, where we have designed features for.

Planting Services

Flowerbeds in the garden can be a nightmare to keep on top of if not designed and planted properly;

Show Details +

It seems like you can be forever introducing new plants for them only to disappear amongst the undergrowth of other thuggish, more dominant plants! Whilst a garden without plants is very easy to keep on top of, but will look cold and un-finished, a garden with too many plants can so easily become a jungle!

A garden with a planting scheme designed by Holden Clough Landscapes can transform your garden into a colourful paradise, avoiding both these scenarios. Introducing structure into the garden through use of flower beds, these should provide not only all year round colour given by different foliages, berries and flowers, but by using the height and spread of each plant it in turn provides a good structure and focal point to any garden.

All plants used by Holden Clough Landscapes are supplied by Holden Clough Nursery. Plants from the nursery are grown here in the Ribble Valley and with over 80 years growing expertise you can buy with confidence. Instead of growing plants under glass and in heated greenhouses, plants from Holden Clough Nursery are grown tough, meaning they will establish successfully in your garden - the big difference between using plants from a nursery rather than a garden centre! The vast majority of garden centre stock is actually imported from Holland, so not acclimatized to our outside conditions – you can always be sure in your purchase with us that the plants we plant in your garden haven’t been grown in Holland, but grown by our own fair hands.

Patios

A garden is a great feature to compliment any house visually, and you can also get much more out of your garden by turning it into an outside living space.

Show Details +

Patios help provide the extra space which can be used for special occasions, barbeques or just sitting out in your garden and taking in the scenery. Your patio can be constructed to suit your taste perfectly, whether it’s a traditional Yorkshire Stone patio, or for something more modern how about an Indian sandstone patio, which provides a great effect with a smaller price tag.

We like any job - it may even be as simple as matching in with an existing patio which you wish to extend; no job too small or large!

Have you had a bad patio experience?

If your only experience of a patio is one with flagstones that constantly wobble and are loose, then don’t let this be a problem as Holden Clough Landscapes constructs patios to a high standard. A common mistake when patios are constructed is the flagstones will be laid using the ‘5 dob’ method, where each flagstone is laid on 5 dobs of mortar.

This may a very quick and easy method of laying, but is not used by ourselves or any professional Landscaping team, because when the ground below the flagstone starts to settle and one of the dobs sinks then this causes the flagstone to become loose.

Our Patio Construction:

  1. At Holden Clough Landscapes, we use a solid sub-base to build upon; by excavating the site to just below its final level, filling with a layer of hardcore, and then compacting with a vibrating plate it creates a base firmer and more reliable to work with.
  2. We then lay our flagstones on a thin layer of concrete, which taking slightly longer than the ‘5 dob’ method does guarantee that your flagstones won’t wobble.
  3. Once the flagstones are laid, the final job is to point up the patio. This is a very important stage, as it can either make or break the final finish, and also affects how the patio will stand up against the test of time. Again this is an area that some cut short by brushing in dry cement and sand, and rinsing off with a watering can; although providing a satisfactory appearance, after a few winters of water getting into the cracks and freezing, it blasts it out. We have seen patios that look like they have never been pointed up because of this bad method - after a time, the mortar turns into dust and simply washes away. We however use the traditional trowel method to point up any patio and use a mix specific to the individual type of stone being used each time - at Holden Clough Landscapes we cut no corners, and provide you with a job that will last many years to come. We understand that there is only one way to do a job, and that is properly!

Retaining Walls

In most gardens there will be changes in level, and one of the most common ways of retaining this change in level is by means of a retaining wall.

Show Details +

At Holden Clough Landscapes we can construct retaining walls out of a diverse range of materials including Reclaimed Railway Sleepers, Natural Stone or Wood.

Reclaimed Railway Sleepers give traditional, weathered characteristics to any garden as they are of a dark colour and a chunky scale. Cut to any size by a chainsaw, they are very versatile as they can be formed into not just straight but curved walls, and they also make a great set of steps.

Natural Stone retaining walls are the most popular choice, with stone providing not only strength but adding character to any garden. It is a very diverse material which can be used to create retaining walls from 1ft upwards, and when constructed properly will last a lifetime. Natural Stone retaining walls provide a greater amount of retaining strength compared to a sleeper retaining wall; if you’re after a wall for an area such as below a drive or car parking area, then stone is best.

Timber retaining walls are often used where the wall is not required to be of a great height and more of a low key wall. With wood being of a natural colour it helps the structure blend into any garden, with the effect of weathering helping to soften up the colours. Raised vegetable beds use a version of a timber retaining wall to retain the soil inside the raised bed and they give a very cottage garden like feel.

Dry-Stone Walling

Dry-Stone walling is a popular method of constructing walls which has been around for thousands of years.

Constructing a dry-stone wall properly relies on crossing joints between stones, and sloping the face of the wall inwards which allows the wall to settle with time using gravity to hold the stones in place. When done correctly this method provides a wall with great strength that can last hundreds of years.

Being in the Ribble Valley most gardens will have a dry-stone wall in them whether it be a boundary wall or just as a feature. At Holden Clough Landscapes we can build dry-stone walls to a high standard from scratch, simply perform repairs to an existing wall or create a dry-stone feature in any garden.

Stone Walling

With stone being a natural material it is a very popular choice used to construct walls.

Stone walls provide a great amount of character and charm to any garden, whether they be a large retaining wall or a small freestanding garden wall. A stone wall can either be of a pointed-up style where cement holds the stones together and is visible, or a wall that looks like a dry-stone wall but has a cement middle just to add extra strength.

Brick Laying

With bricks being a very diverse material at Holden Clough Landscapes we can construct anything, from walls and steps to even Barbeques.

Nowadays bricks don’t just come in the common ‘red’ but in an exciting range of blends from different colours of terracotta, reclaimed imitations or maybe even original reclaimed bricks. We often use bricks where the customer requires the image of their garden to resemble a visual similarity to the material that their house is built of.

Steps are a great way of dealing with a change of level in a garden, whether it is a grand set of steps leading to a large patio, or a small set leading down to a pond. They can be designed to match the surroundings so you don’t even notice them.

Construction can be from many materials including:

  • Brick
  • Stone
  • Railway Sleepers
  • Timber

Whatever material you decide to choose, steps give character to any garden and help give a feeling of depth and break up the landscape.

Garden Clearance

Gardens can so easily become overgrown and here at Holden Clough Landscapes we can help you tackle this problem.

Show Details +

Commonly gardens become overgrown when weeds and brambles get out of control, and sometimes trees become a problem.

In the past we have helped transform Holden Clough Nursery as some areas of the Nursery had become extremely over-grown as you can see in the pictures below. Sometimes it is just a case of a simple weed followed by herbiciding the weeds to stop them coming back, but sometimes it involves clearing out old trees and brambles.

So, if you have a back garden which seems a lot smaller than it used to be because Mother Nature has taken over and you don’t know where to start tackling it, then give us a call and we can come up with ideas and solutions.
